'Black Brecht', 2019
The collective Self-Defense, in residence at Casa do Povo between February and April 2020, presents, on March 12th and 13th, the play Black Brecht: What if Brecht was Black? The Presentation is part of the program of FarOFFa | Parallel Arts Circuit of São Paulo, a performing arts show that takes place in various spaces around the city between March 10th and 15th.
The play is directed by Eugênio Lima and written by Dione Carlos, and is freely inspired by the work The Trial of Luculus, by Bertolt Brecht.
In the process of creating the show, the collective focused on what began as a provocation: What if Brecht were black? What place would race occupy? Would his work be read from an intersectional perspective? Uniting class, race and gender? Would it be possible to build a show based on an Afro-Brazilian diasporic perspective of Brecht's work and procedures?
To compose Black Brecht's text, various materials were used – collective writings, sound dramaturgies, gestures, other public immersions, exhibitions and various urban interventions.
