'Exsurgência', 2020
Inspired by creative procedures used by Miró and Mondrian — and described by João Cabral de Melo Neto in the poem “Yes Against Yes (Serial)” — this work is based on the proposal to unlearn the most well-known paths of artistic creation, seeking new ways of making and thinking about art.
[Miró, right-handed, would have started using his left hand to find a still fresh line; Mondrian would have attached rulers and set squares to his hands to force the abandonment of habitual improvisation.]
Immersed in long individual quarantines, the artists involved shared a common concern, highlighted in their conversations: What can emerge from this period? What kind of flow can be found that is generated internally in this state we are in?
Exsurgence — a hydrological term that designates the point where a watercourse begins; zones or discharge points of an aquifer — is here also a metaphor for the origin of an underground, silent and latent creative flow. The installation proposes to make this place of emergence visible: where the internal finds form, where experimentation replaces repetition, and where the body, matter and time are reorganized in new gestures.
