'what's on a girl's mind'

We are all imprisoned by what is expected of a woman – an image created and sustained by advertising and the media.

This action is a collection of advertisements from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, which serve as evidence and context for understanding how we were taught to be and what men expect of us.

Despite being old, these ads are from one or two generations ago, which allows us to imagine how these images still remain in the collective unconscious to this day – especially given their similarity to current ads and magazine covers.

During the action, I project these images onto a mirror and mark the women's mouths with lipstick. It is a way of relating to them, recognizing them in myself, silencing them, and creating layers of interpretation as one image follows another.
